Why Backflow Testing

In many cities and towns, these devices require an annual inspection or test to ensure that the valve is working properly and the risk of contamination is diminished and results reported to the appropriate water authority. Hydro-Tech can schedule testing and do the reporting for you, by simply calling our office and prepaying for the test. We accept check by phone or credit card payments as a quick and convenient option to get your testing scheduled. Once prepayment has been received, your system has been turned on for the season and if your backflow device is located outside your home, there will be no reason for you to be home for this service. After the test has been completed the results will be forwarded to your water authority and a copy emailed to you for your files.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a backflow test and why is it required?

A backflow test is a procedure that ensures your backflow prevention device is working correctly to prevent contaminated water (from irrigation systems, pools, or boilers) from flowing backward into the public drinking water supply. Many jurisdictions throughout the DMV require annual testing to protect the safety of the community’s potable water.

Most local counties, such as Fairfax County and Montgomery County, require annual backflow device testing. These mechanical valves have internal seals and moving parts that are subject to wear or fouling, making regular inspections essential to ensure they function properly.

Yes. In-ground irrigation systems are considered potential sources of “cross connections” because they can allow pesticides or fertilizers to enter the public water supply during a drop in water pressure. A certified backflow prevention device is required to mitigate this risk and maintain compliance with local plumbing codes.

Only individuals or companies with specific certifications, such as Virginia DPOR-certified backflow technicians, are authorized to test and certify these devices. Hydro-Tech Irrigation has a large staff of certified professionals qualified to perform these crucial tests and submit reports to local water purveyors. We recommend scheduling your test during your spring irrigation start-up.

If an assembly fails its certification test, it must be cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced. Hydro-Tech Irrigation technicians carry genuine manufactured replacement parts and repair kits to fix most issues on the spot, ensuring your system remains in compliance and your water service is not interrupted.
